No. 5 Marlins fall to the No. 4 Hornets of Lynchburg in the Quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament

LYNCHBURG, Virginia - The No. 5 seeded Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team fell to the No. 4 seeded Hornets from the University of Lynchburg 19-4 in the quarterfinals of the 2022 ODAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament at Shellenberger Field in Lynchburg, VA.

GAME RECAP
The Hornets broke onto the scoreboard first with a pair of goals in the opening three minutes of play. Over a four minute span, the Marlins knotted the score at two all as Sam Hill and Breanna Sviland scored for VWU. Lynchburg closed out the first quarter with three more goals to lead 5-2 heading into the second quarter. Lynchburg continued to pull away from Virginia Wesleyan in the second quarter scoring six consecutive goals taking an 11-2 lead into the halftime break.

VWU came out of the break to score the first goal of the third quarter as Michaela Elston converted a Camryn Gavula pass into a goal before the Hornets went on a 4-0 run to pull ahead 15-3. The Hornets added two more goals to their total before the Marlins scored their fourth goal of the game that put the score at 17-4 with 7:22 remaining in the contest. Katie Baker sent a pass to Mikayla Szudera who connected with the back of the net for the goal. Lynchburg closed out the fourth quarter with two more goals putting the final tally at 19-4.

Kirsten Ivory played 53 minutes between the pipes giving up 17 goals while making five saves. Brittneyann Hoover played the other seven minutes during which she giving up a pair of goals.

The women's lacrosse season comes to a close with a final overall record of 9-9 and a conference mark of 5-3.
