Marlins score 10 against Yellow Jackets in midweek ODAC game

ASHLAND, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team fell to the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College 22-10 on Wednesday evening in Ashland, VA. Seven Marlins scored in the contest led by Helen Kennedy-Butler with four goals.

GAME RECAP
The Yellow Jackets opened the game scoring three goals in the first seven minutes of play. Helen Kennedy-Butler scored for Virginia Wesleyan at the 7:32 mark of the first quarter off a pass from Mikayla Szudera. R-MC closed out the opening quarter on a six goal run to lead 9-1 heading into the second quarter. 

Randolph-Macon started the second quarter with a trio of goals before Natalie Dunn scored for VWU off a pass from Szudera. The Yellow Jackets added three more goal taking a 15-2 lead before Breanna Sviland connected with the back of the net following a pass from Caroline Engle as teams headed into the break with the score sitting at 15-3. 

After the intermission, R-MC scored the opening goal of the third quarter before VWU recorded a trio of goals courtesy of Michaela Elston, Kennedy-Butler, and Engle to pull within 10 goals, 16-6. The Yellow Jackets added a goal to break up Virginia Wesleyan's scoring drive while Kennedy-Butler recorded the last goal of the third quarter putting the score at 17-7. 

The Marlins added three more goals in the fourth quarter as Camryn Gavula, Kennedy-Butler, and Szudera recorded one of the three Marlin goals.

The women's lacrosse team is back in action on Saturday, April 30th, when they return to Birdsong Field for their regular season finale against the nationally ranked No. 5 Generals of Washington & Lee University.
