Marymount women's lacrosse downs Marlins

ARLINGTON, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team fell to the Saints of Marymount University on Friday evening in nonconference action in Arlington, VA. VWU moves to 0-3 on the season while MU opens their season with a win.

INSIDE THE SCORE
The Saints were the only team to find the back of the as they put 12 goals up on the Marlins in the first half of action. VWU managed to get three shots off in the first half with all three on goal, but the Marymount keeper made saves to stop each shot from finding the back of the net. 

Marymount opened the second half with four goals taking a 16-0 lead until the 46th minute of action when Caroline Engle finally connected with the net for the Marlins first goal of the game. Engle's goal came off the pass from Camryn Gavula with 15:37 remaining in the game. The Saints added four more goals taking a 20-1 lead before Engle scored her second goal  of the game off a free position shot with 4:24 left to play. Marymount put one more goal on the board for good measure and won their season opener 21-2.

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by Caroline Engle with both Marlin goals on three shots, all on frame. Kayla Gush added two shots in the contest only one of which was on goal. Brittneyann Hoover led the Marlins with five ground balls while Mikayla Callahan scooped up three draw controls. Jordan Moilanen (L: 0-3) played all 60 minutes in net for the Marlins giving up 21 goals while making 17 stops.

MARYMOUNT LEADERS
The Saints were led by three different players with four goals each. Six other Marymount players also scored at least one goal against Virginia Wesleyan. Mariel Russ (W: 1-0) picked up her first win in goal of the season giving up two goals on five shots faced and stopping three VWU shots on goal.

UP NEXT
The women's lacrosse team is back in action next Wednesday, March 10, when they take on cross bay rivals Christopher Newport University. The Marlins and Captains will meet in the circle for first draw at 5 PM in Newport News, VA.
