Box Score RALEIGH, North Carolina - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team fell to the Avenging Angels of Meredith College 23-5 on Wednesday evening in nonconference action in Raleigh, NC. VWU falls to 0-2 on the season while MC won their season opener.
INSIDE THE SCORE
Meredith opened the game with four goals in two and a half minutes before Virginia Wesleyan found their first on a goal by Camryn Gavula off the pass from Kayla Gush. The Avenging Angels added three more to take a 7-1 lead before the Marlins connected with the net on a pair of goals, one by Natalie Dunn in the seventh minute of action and one by Caroline Engle a minute later off a free position shot, to trail 7-3 with 22:33 left in the half.
The Avenging Angels put back-to-back goals going ahead 9-3 until a goal by Helen Kennedy-Butler pulled VWU within five, 9-4. Meredith responded with a trio of scores to go up 12-4 until Engle added her second goal of the game putting the score at 12-5 with 16:54 remaining in the half. MC closed out the half with four more goals taking a 16-5 lead into the break.
Meredith controlled the second half of action added seven goals while keeping the Marlins off the board as the Avenging Angels went on to win 23-5
VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by Caroline Engle with two goals on three shots, Camryn Gavula, Natalie Dunn, and Helen Kennedy-Butler each added a goal to total the five VWU scored on the evening. Jordan Moilanen (L: 0-2) played all 60 minutes in net for the Marlins giving up 23 goals while also stopping 15 shots.
MEREDITH LEADERS
The Avenging Angels were led by Lilia Cruz with eight goals and three assists for 11 points on 12 shots on goal. Olivia Burke added four goals while Tori Witmer and Arrianna May contributed three goals each for hat tricks of their own. Joy Deitrich (W: 1-0) playd 30 minutes in goal giving up all five goals to the Marlins while making two saves.

The women's lacrosse team is back in action this Friday when they travel to Arlington, VA, to take on the Saints of Marymount University. First draw is scheduled for 6 PM between the Marlins and Saints.
