NEWPORT NEWS, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team fell to the Captains of Christopher Newport University on Wednesday evening in nonconference action in Newport News, VA.

FIRST HALF

• CNU got the scoring started with five goals in the opening 4:12.
• Virginia Wesleyan collected their first goal of the game shortly after the draw control as Kayla Gush connected with the back of the net off a pass from Caroline Engle that put the score at 5-1.
• The Captains closed out the first half with nine more goals to lead the Marlins 14-1 at the break.

SECOND HALF

• The second half of the game was controlled by CNU who added nine more goals to the score to defeat VWU 23-1. 

KEY STATS

• Kayla Gush scored the lone goal for the Marlins with Caroline Engle adding the only assist. 
• Mikayla Callahan led VWU with six draw controls.
• Jordan Moilanen (L: 0-4) played nearly 50 minutes of the game making eight saves while also giving up 20 goals.

The women's lacrosse team is back in action this Saturday for their first home game of the 2021 season as the Marlins host the Monarchs of Methodist University at Birdsong Field. The two teams will meet for first draw at 5 PM. No spectators are allowed at this time.
