Late Marlin comeback falls short in double-overtime against the Merchant Marine Academy

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team fell to the Mariners of the Merchant Marine Academy 16-15 in double-overtime on Friday afternoon at Birdsong Field in Virginia Beach, VA. The Marlins move to 1-6 on the season, while the Mariners are now 1-1.

INSIDE THE SCORE
The game began with the Marlins finding the scoreboard first with a goal from Avery Frangelli 51 seconds into the action giving VWU a 1-0 lead. The Merchant Marine Academy scored three consecutive goals taking a 3-1 lead by the 17:22 mark. Tori Manahan pulled Virginia Wesleyan within a goal, 3-2, after she connected with the goal off of a Mikayla Callahan pass with 14:35 on the clock. The rest of the first half was all the USMMA Mariners as they scored six unanswered goals taking a 9-2 lead into the break. 

Manahan set the tone for the second half right out of the gate as she scored her second goal of the game eight seconds into the resumption of play. The Merchant Marine Academy put a pair of goals on the board going up 11-3 with 27:47 left to play. VWU started to come back scoring four consecutive goals climbing within four goals, 11-7, with the clock ticking under 18 minutes remaining in the second half. Shaunice Rone got the run started with a goal, then came two from Manahan, followed by one from Frangelli. 

The USMMA put three more goals on the board increasing their lead back out to seven goals, 14-7, before Manahan found her fifth goal of the game at the 9:50 mark. The Mariners added their last goal of regulation at 9:26 on an unassisted goal from Grace McHugh, before the Marlins closed out the game with seven straight goals in the final 8:48 minutes. Callahan scored her lone goal off a free position shot to start the run. Cali Magee scored her first collegiate goal just under the six-minute mark putting the score at 15-10. Natalie Dunn scored off the Melissa Runo pass followed by a pair of free-position shots, one each from Rone and Frangelli. Rone scored the 14th VWU goal in a man-down situation with under two minutes to play and Kayla Gush knotted the score just as time expired on a free-position to force an overtime period. 

Neither team scored in the first three minutes of overtime which forced a second three minute overtime period. With the clock winding down under a minute the Mariners got a power-play situation that they took advantage of as Jenna Turrentine scored the game-winning goal with 43 seconds left in the double-overtime period.

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by Tori Manahan with five goals on nine shots on the evening. Manahan also added nine draw controls. Avery Frangelli and Shaunice Rone each tallied a hat trick with three goals apiece. Cali Magee in addition to scoring her first collegiate goal led the Marlins with five ground balls, three draw controls, and two caused turnovers. Jordan Moilanen played the first 46:05 minutes in goal giving up 13 goals on 25 shots faced while making 12 saves. Mike Hairston (L, 0-2) finished in goal playing 19:12 minutes while giving up three goals on eight shots faced while making five saves. 

MERCHANT MARINE LEADERS
The Mariners were led by Grace McHugh with five goals and an assist on 16 shots. Jenna Turrentine and Angela Parker each recorded four goals on eight and seven shots respectively. Jessica Gamjager (W, 1-1) played all 65:17 minutes of the double-overtime game facing 23 shots giving up 15 goals and making eight saves.

KEY MOMENT
The key moment of the game came in the final minute of the second overtime period when the Mariners scored the game-winning goal in a power play scenario.
