Box Score Marlins Drop Fast-Paced Affair to Guilford
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan College women's lacrosse team exploded for one of its highest scoring game of the season, scoring 11 of the 32 goals scored in a 21-11 loss to Guilford College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action Saturday.
Guilford struck first as Demming Carlow found Madison Iandoli for a goal just 23 seconds into the game.
The Marlins responded at 27:50 when Megan Schallock found Liza Holford to even the score. Virginia Wesleyan captured its first lead just 17 seconds later when Schallock won the draw and raised up the field for the score.
Guilford answered the Marlins by scoring nine of the final 11 goals of the first half to take a 10-4 lead into the break. Iandoli finished with four goals and an assist in the half while Carlow posted four assists to go with a lone goal.
Guilford scored the first two goals of the second half to go up 12-4 with 28:37 to play when the Marlins posted their most impressive rally of the game.
Avery Frangelli scored an unassisted tally at 25:06 to start a run that saw the Marlins score four of the next five goals in the game. The Marlin defense held Guilford to just one goal over 10 minutes during the run.
Jordan Callahan, Schallock, and Rachel Fuller all scored in the run that saw Virginia Wesleyan cut the deficit to 13-8 with 20:31 left in the game.
Guilford answered with back-to-back free position goals to go back up by seven. The Marlins would cut the lead once again with less than five minutes remaining but could get no closer than six goals the rest of the way.
Iandoli finished with seven goals and an assist for Guilford (6-6/3-1) as Carlow registered four goals, four assists, five draw controls, and three caused turnovers.
Schallock had three goals, an assist, and five draw controls for the Marlins. Ashley Campos scooped six ground balls and caused four turnovers to go with a goal of her own.
Virginia Wesleyan (1-11/0-5) travels to Bridgewater College (6-4/1-2) Wednesday for a 7 p.m. ODAC contest.
