Box Score Hornets Down VWC in ODAC Play
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College women's lacrosse team team fell to ODAC opponent Shenandoah University, 18-5, Saturday afternoon at Birdsong Field.
Shenandoah wasted no time scoring, as Brittany Arndt hit a shot just 39 seconds of the starting whistle. Alexandra Simonson would extend the lead 2-0 at 25:35 after connecting off an Annie McCorry assist. Nakona Wolfe completed Shenandoah's three-goal run with a score of her own less than a minute later.
Megan Schallock ended the run when she hit the back of the net at 24:31 to make the score 3-1.
Shenandoah's Abby Zorrilla found the back of the cage a minute after Schallock to start a 7-0 run. Three different Hornets combined for scores during that run. Zorilla tallied five goals in that twelve minute span to put the Hornets on top 10-1.
At the 10:46 mark, captain Liza Holford cut the deficit to 10-2 when she provided an unassisted tally.
The half ended with three goals by Shenandoah in the last 10 minutes to put the Hornets up 13-2. Kimberly Pritchett scored twice during that late run.
Zorrilla opened up second half scoring for Shenandoah as she recorded her sixth goal of the night at the 27:55 mark. Simonson would add another goal nearly two minutes later to make the score 15-2.
Schallock scored first for the Marlins in the second half providing a pair of goals back-to-back scores over a four minute span to make the score 15-4 with 19:14 to play.
Goals by Shenandoah's Madisson Wood and Nikki Zerna at 13:47 and 12:33 made the score 17-4.
Holford scored another goal at 11:12, but Shenandoah still managed to score three of the final four goals of the half to provide the final margin.
Zorrilla led Shenandoah (3-6/1-1) with seven points on six goals and an assist. Simonson contributed two goals on the day and one assist.
The top Marlin performers of the day were Schallock who posted three goals, 10 draw controls and three ground balls and Holford who record two goals and three draw controls.
Virginia Wesleyan (1-9/0-3) will travel to Lynchburg College (5-4/1-2) Wednesday for a 6 p.m. ODAC start.
