Box Score Marlins Use Offensive Explosion to Best Sweet Briar
SWEET BRIAR, Va.-- The Virginia Wesleyan College women's lacrosse team exploded for 10 goals in the first half to secure a 14-2 victory over Sweet Briar College Wednesday afternoon.
The Marlins came out of the gate fast scoring 19 seconds into the game off the stick of Megan Schallock. Following this goal VWC went on a 5-0 goal scoring run, capped off by a goal from Ashley Winslow.
Sweet Briar answered at the 11:52 mark of the first half with Reba Gagne finding the back of the cage. Gagne, following a Wesleyan goal, scored another unassisted goal to make the score 7-2 in favor of the guests.
The Marlins produced another scoring run, scoring seven unanswered goals that spanned the final 38 minutes of the game. Becca Winslow and Schallock each tallied two goals during the run. This run proved to be enough as VWC's cushion help them secure the win.
The Wesleyan defense was suffocating, only allowing 10 shots on goal.
The Marlins also won 13 draw controls, in comparison to Sweet Briar's four.
The Vixens were led by Gagne who scored both goals.
Schallock and Becca Winslow each found the back of the cage four times with the latter also producing three assists. Ashley Winslow scored two goals. Shannon Ruffalo, Rachel Fuller, Liza Holford, and Jaquelyn Gabaldon each added a goal.
Virginia Wesleyan (3-13/1-7) returns to Birdsong field Saturday to close out the regular season as they take on ODAC rival Randolph (2-14/1-7) for Senior Day at 4 p.m.
