Box Score Roanoke Surge Bests Women's Lax 17-5
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Roanoke College women's lacrosse team scored 13 goals in the first half, carrying the Maroons to a 17-5 victory over Virginia Wesleyan College in Saturday's Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match up.
The Maroons were first on the board at 28:58 with a goal off the stick of Katie Clements, but Megan Schallock would respond with a goal 21 seconds later for the Marlins.
Virginia Wesleyan kept pace with the high-powered offense of the Maroons early as the Marlins corralled the first three draw controls of the game to keep the Maroon defense on guard.
Roanoke went on a 12-goal run after Challock evened the contest, but Becca Winslow managed to break the run when she found the back of the cage for the Marlins with a free position goal a minute before halftime.
Roanoke started the second half strong with the first two goals scored by Nicole Zelnik. The Marlins answered at 21:35 with two goals off the stick of Schallock two swing some momentum in favor of the home team. Each team would grab a goal to end the game 17-5.
Megan Schallock paced the Marlins with three goals and seven draw controls, while Madison Carroll had 15 saves. Shannon Ruffalo and Theresa Yunger corralled three ground balls each for the Marlins.
Courtney McCartin led Roanoke (8-8/6-3) with six goals and eight assists for an incredible 14-point effort. She finished two points shy of the single-game record set by Marlin head coach Meagan DiCave in 2000. Emma Boris collected seven ground balls.
Virginia Wesleyan (2-13/1-7) will head to Sweet Briar College (1-6) Wednesday for a non-conference matchup before closing out the regular season at home against Randolph College on Saturday.
