Box Score Strong Second Half Cannot Overcome CNU
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College women's lacrosse team scored five goals in the second half, but it was not enough as Christopher Newport University downed the Marlins 18-8 in non-conference action Wednesday.
The Captains scored two quick goals in the first two minutes as Lindsay Weaver and Sarah Culver both found the back of the cage. Following a Megan Schallock goal that cut the deficit in half, CNU added two more tallies on shots from Weaver and Catie Chess. The Captain offense was so dangerous in the early going, they scored on each of their first four shots.
Becca Winslow capitalized on a free position shot for the Marlins second goal, making the score 4-2, but CNU scored four straight and six of the final seven goals in the first half to take a 10-3 margin into halftime.
CNU scored the first two goals of the second half, the first of which was a man-up opportunity from Meaghan Galvin. Virginia Wesleyan locked down on the Captains from that point on, but the 12-3 deficit was too much to overcome.
Schallock had three goals and an assist for the Marlins in the second half while Madison Carroll made five stops in the final half to keep the Marlins close.
Weaver led CNU (4-1) with four goals while Julia Golden and Culver had three goals each. Galvin finished with three goals and three assists for the Captains.
Schallock paced the Marlins with four goals and two assists as Winslow finished with two goals and an assist to go along with 14 saves from Carroll.
Virginia Wesleyan (0-4) hosts Albright College (3-2) Tuesday, March 15 for a 7 p.m. non-conference start.
