Box Score SALEM, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan College's pattern of comeback victories failed to materialize Friday in an 18-6 Old Dominion Athletic Conference loss to the host Maroons of Roanoke College.
Roanoke(6-3, 6-2) led just 3-2 after rookie Megan Schallock (Waukesha, Wis./Mukwonago) scored for VWC with 16:14 remaining to be played in the first half. But, the host team reeled off the next seven goals, including the first three in the second half, to open up a 10-2 lead.
Virginia Wesleyan (8-6, 4-4) has shown the ability to wipe out deficits with some impressive rallies during the season, but this time that effort stalled. Schallock and senior Candace Carey (Charlottesville/Albemarle) appeared to have something started with back-to-back goals to stop the Roanoke run, but it was only a temporary stop.
Roanoke scored eight of the next 10 goals, including the final five in the last 12:21 of the game, to pull away for the win.
Schallock led VWC's scoring efforts with three goals. She also recorded a game-high seven draw control wins, matching her own season high. Brooke Cabeceiras (Cambridge, Md./Cambridge-South Dorchester) scored two goals for VWC.
Claire Feeney (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) led Roanoke with six goals.
Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Sunday, April 12, hosting North Carolina's Meredith College in a non-conference game beginning at 1 p.m.
