Randolph-Macon slips by Virginia Wesleyan, 13-12

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Randolph-Macon College's Yellow Jackets scored off a free position shot with 2:37 to play Wednesday and held off the host Virginia Wesleyan College Marlins down the stretch to post a 13-12 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game on Foster Field at the Trinder Center.

The goal ruined a late comeback by the Marlins (4-9, 3-4) as Kelly Jacobson (Nokesville/Brentsville) and Brooke Cabeceiras (Cambridge, Md./Cambridge-South Dorchester) scored consecutive goals in the final 9:42 to pull Virginia Wesleyan into a 12-12 tie.

The game included seven ties and three lead changes.  Virginia Wesleyan opened up a two-goal lead twice in the first half, but could not build on it. R-MC (9-4, 4-4) tied the game at 6-6 to end the first half and took the lead with the first goal of the second half, scored by Emily Lynch  on a free position shot.

Virginia Wesleyan came back to take the lead at 10-9 on consecutive goals by Nikki Salyers (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park). But, the visiting Yellow Jackets tallied three consecutive goals to open up a 12-10 lead with 12:34 remaining to be played. Jacobson and Cabeceiras followed with their goals to tie the game.

Cabeceiras led VWC scoring with four goals, followed by Salyers with three goals and Jacobson with two.  Katie Russo (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) led R-MC with four goals.

R-MC finished with a 27-25 edge in shots.  Both teams picked up 36 grounds balls and Virginia Wesleyan led in draw controls 17-10. Rookie Chole Weinmann (San Marcos, Calif./San Marcos) picked up 10 draw wins for the Marlins and Carla Williams (Magnolia, Del./Ceasar Rodney) and Cabeceiras led the team with six ground balls each.

Rookie goalie Madison Carroll (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) finished with nine saves for VWC. Nicole Woodworth (Culpeper/Eastern View) recorded 11 saves for the Yellow Jackets.

Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Saturday, April 13, in ODAC play at Roanoke College at 12 p.m.
