Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. - A two-goal run by Virginia Wesleyan College's women's lacrosse team late in the fourth quarter Saturday looked good at the time, giving the Marlins a 10-9 lead in a tight Old Dominion Athletic Conference quarterfinal game with the host Quakers of Guilford College.
But, Guilford not only managed to find the game-tying goal in regulation, but also scored one goal in each overtime to pull out a 12-10 victory.
Carla Williams (Leonoardtown, Md./Leonardtown) and Courtney Shelton (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) scored the two late goals for Virginia Wesleyan (6-11), and Lily Colley (Wells, Maine/Wells) came through for Guilford (11-6) to tie the game and send it into overtime.
Summer Frazier (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood), who sparked the Quakers throughout the game, came through when Guilford needed it, scoring with one second remaining in the first overtime and again with 1:32 on the clock in the second OT.
There were five lead changes and nine tie scores in the game. Virginia Wesleyan led 7-5 after Nikki Salyers (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) fired in back-to-back goals early in the second half, giving the Marlins their largest lead of the game. Guilford owned one-goal leads at 4-3 and 9-8, before opening up the two-goal advantage in the overtime sessions.
Salyers led VWC scoring overall with three goals. Mari Carmichael (Seattle, Wash./Nathan Hale) and Shelton added two goals each. Natalie Belva (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty), Carmichael, and Shelton add posted two assists each.
Frazier led Guilford for six goals and Colley finished with four. Guilford out-shot the Marlins 31-20, including 4-0 in overtime. Both teams won 13 draw control battles, with Carmichael, Shelton, and Salyers each taking three for VWC.
VWC goalie Brittany MacKnew (Abingdon, Md./Bel Air) recorded 11 saves for the Marlins. Liza Mettler (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Beaumont) had five saves for Guilford.
