Washington and Lee overpowers Marlins 16-5

Box Score

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Taylor Harding (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Collegiate) had two goals and an assists, but Washington and Lee used a huge second-half spurt to down Virginia Wesleyan 16-5 Saturday at Foster Field.

The Marlins appeared set to go into halftime trailing just 5-3, but Washington and Lee midfielder Meredith Lavin scored with just one second remaining to send the Generals into intermission with a three-goal advantage. Harding's second goal of the game with 19:06 remaining kept the Marlins within striking distance at 7-4, but the Generals scored the next five goals to break things open. Courtney Shelton (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) stopped Washington and Lee's streak with a tally off a feed from Harding, but the Generals closed with a four-goal blitz to claim their third straight victory.

The Marlins, meanwhile, dropped their third straight and fell to 3-8 and 1-3 in the ODAC.

Freshman Candace Carey (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) scored Virginia Wesleyan's first goal with an assist from Natalie Belva, (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) and Nikki Salyers (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) added an unassisted tally. But otherwise, the Marlins' recent offensive woes continued. Virginia Wesleyan squeezed off just 11 shots, and their five goals were a season low. The Marlins scored just six goals in their previous game, a 13-6 loss at Guilford.

The Marlins will look to turn things around on Tuesday when they visit Randolph-Macon.
