Late surge not enough as Marlins fall to Lynchburg

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Virginia Wesleyan College's women's lacrosse Marlins outscored Lynchburg College's Hornets 5-2 in the final 4:48 of Wednesday's game on Foster Field at the Trinder Center.

That was the good news for VWC.

The bad news was that the final show of energy was too late and not enough, as Lynchburg led 12-4 when the Marlins kicked into another gear.  Lynchburg withstood the final surge to take a 14-8 Old Dominion Athletic Conference win.

Courtney Williams (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) scored four goals for the Marlins, who also had solo goals from four other players.

Lesley Buckingham led Lynchburg with four goals, and Morgan Logue and Kendall Adkin added three each.

Virginia Wesleyan (3-5, 1-1) trailed 5-1 at halftime as Lynchburg (5-3, 1-0) benefitted from a couple of odd goals.  The first was on a ball that was knocked out of the Lynchburg player's stick by a VWC defender and rolled into the cage.  The other followed an outstanding save by Brittany MacKnew (Abingdon, Md./Bel Air), who saw the ball richochet off the stick of a Lynchurg player and into the net over her shoulder.

MacKnew produced 10 saves in 44 minutes and Michelle Mace (Dumfries, Va./Woodbridge Forest Park) recorded five saves in 15 minutes.  Christina Tran came up with nine saves for Lynchburg.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Saturday, Mar. 26, hosting Guilford College at 5 p.m.
