The Virginia Wesleyan women's lacrosse team (2-3, 0-1 ODAC) faced their first conference opponent of the season, the University of Lynchburg, and lost 16-3.
Reese Morgenthaler recorded one goal off seven shots and picked up one ground ball and two draw controls.
Gianna Delevan scored one goal off two shots.
Kaila DeWees also tallied one goal off one shot.
The Marlins took advantage from the start of the game as
Reese Morgenthaler scored the first goal in the third minute of the game from the free position. The Hornets fought back, making back-to-back goals less than a minute apart to take a 2-1 lead. The Marlins saw scoring opportunities in the remainder of the first quarter with a shot by
Gianna Delevan that was saved by the Lynchburg goalie, but it was the Hornets who executed with two more goals in the first period to put them ahead 4-1.
Lynchburg stretched their lead to 7-1 with three consecutive goals in the first two and a half minutes of the second quarter. The Marlins responded with aggressive play as
Reese Morgenthaler and
Madison Pfister both took shot attempts but were unable to convert. With 9:10 on the clock, Lynchburg managed to score again. VWU continued to apply pressure with four more shot attempts, but the Hornets gained possession and scored a goal with 2:54 on the clock to lead 9-1.
Reese Morgenthaler continued to take chances in the third quarter, but Lynchburg continued their dominance, scoring three more goals to lead 13-1.
Daphne Myers also had a shot on goal, but the Hornet goalie recorded a save.
The Hornets had a strong start to the final quarter, scoring their 14th goal with 11:35 on the clock, but this time, the Marlins responded with a goal from the free position by
Kaila DeWees to bring the score to 14-2. VWU turned over possession and Lynchburg scored again to go up 15-2. Two minutes later,
Gianna Delevan found her precision, scoring the final Marlin goal of the game with 4:01 remaining in play. The Hornets scored once more, defeating the Marlins 16-3.
Next, the Marlins will host non-conference opponent, DeSales University, on Monday, March 10, at 3 p.m.
