The Virginia Wesleyan women's lacrosse team (2-4, 0-1 ODAC) hosted non-conference opponent, DeSales University and lost 16-7.
Madison Pfister led the VWU offense with three goals on five shots, two ground balls, two caused turnovers, and one draw control.
Creelyn Bastinelli recorded two goals on six shots and two ground balls.
Melissa Dolt played all 60 minutes in net, allowed 16 goals and made six saves in the loss.
DeSales found success from the start with a goal made 40 seconds into play. The Bulldogs went on to score six more goals to take a convincing 7-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Marlins saw multiple offensive opportunities as
Madison Pfister took a shot that hit the post, and
Reese Morgenthaler recorded a shot on goal; but they were unable to score in the first quarter.
The Bulldogs continued their success into the second quarter, stretching their lead to 11-0 with 5:46 remaining in play. With 2:16 on the clock,
Creelyn Bastinelli scored an unassisted goal to put the Marlins on the board. Two minutes later, DeSales responded with another goal to lead 12-1 at the end of the second period.
Madison Pfister scored the second VWU goal of the day off an assist from
Gabriella Watton to bring the score to 12-2 with 12:32 remaining in third quarter play. The Marlins continued their aggressive play and converted again at the 4:02 mark, as
Kenna Duplechin scored off an assist by
Gianna Delevan, to bring the deficit to nine. Two minutes later, DeSales scored to lead 13-3.
At the start of the fourth quarter,
Creelyn Bastinelli scored her second goal of the day off an assist by
Shaunice Rone. DeSales responded with a goal to lead 14-4 with 9:29 left in play. Next to score was
Madison Pfister for VWU, assisted by
Daphne Myers. Then,
Adrianna Gunther scored off an assist from
Gianna Delevan, making it two in a row for the Marlins and putting them eight points behind DeSales. The Bulldogs responded with two consecutive goals to lead 16-6.
Madison Pfister scored the final goal of the game with a nice feed from
Daphne Myers. Despite the Marlin surge in the final quarter of play, DeSales held onto their lead, winning 16-7.
Next, the Marlins will face Marietta College on Thursday, March 12, at 3 p.m.
