The Virginia Wesleyan women's lacrosse team (3-4, 0-1 ODAC) defeated non-conference opponent, Marietta College, by a score of 12-7.
Adrianna Gunther led the Marlins with three goals off five shots; Gunther also registered one assist, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers.
Reese Morgenthaler was a key player both offensively and defensively, tallying one goal off eight shots, one assist, five ground balls, two caused turnovers, and five draw controls.
Melissa Dolt played the entire sixty minutes in goal for the Marlins, recording six saves and allowing in seven goals.
Adrianna Gunther came out strong for the Marlins with an unassisted goal in the third minute of play. After nearly ten minutes of scoreless play, Marietta scored to tie the game at 1-1 with 2:09 remaining in the first quarter.
Creelyn Bastinelli tallied a goal from the free position to put the Marlins up 2-1 early on in the second quarter. Marietta responded with two consecutive goals to take their first lead of the contest at 3-2. Less than a minute later,
Adrianna Gunther scored off an assist by
Reese Morgenthaler to level the game at 3-3. Marietta, once again, made two straight goals to lead 5-3 at the end of the quarter.
The Marlins dominated third quarter play as they scored six goals to Marietta's zero.
Gianna Delevan was the first Marlin to score in the third quarter with an unassisted goal nearly five minutes into play. Less than two minutes later, it was
Shaunice Rone with the goal to tie the game at 5-5, assisted by
Daphne Myers.
Reese Morgenthaler went on to score, assisted by
Madison Pfister, with 5:51 on the clock, putting VWU ahead 6-5. Within the same minute,
Creelyn Bastinelli scored from the free position to extend the Marlin lead to 7-5. The final two goals of the quarter were scored by
Madison Pfister and
Adrianna Gunther to put VWU ahead 9-5 approaching the final quarter of play.
Madison Pfister began the final quarter of play with a goal less than thirty seconds in, off an assist by
Gianna Delevan, stretching the VWU lead to 10-5. Marietta responded with two consecutive goals to bridge the gap to three.
Gianna Delevan went on to score off an assist by
Creelyn Bastinelli; and it was
Daphne Myers with the final goal of the game from an assist by
Adrianna Gunther to give the Marlins the 12-7 win.
Next, the Marlins will face ODAC opponent, Randolph College, in Lynchburg, Virginia on Saturday, March 15 at 1 p.m.
