The Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team (2-0) defeated non-conference opponent Alma 20-4.
Reese Morgenthaler led the team with six goals and four assists on ten shots, had nine draw controls, and caused one turnover, and one ground ball.
Creelyn Bastinelli tallied five goals and one assist on eight shots, with four ground balls, and two caused turnovers, and teammate
Daphne Myers recorded two goals and two assists, on three shots.
Melissa Dolt got the win playing all 60 minutes, allowed four goals, and had two saves.
The Marlins opened up the scoring with a goal at the 14:55 mark from
Reese Morgenthaler.
Creelyn Bastinelli scored the second goal with a free position shot to put VWU up 2-0. Bastinelli scored two minutes later to extend their lead to 3-0. Morgenthaler scored on a great shot past the Alma keeper to give the Marlins a 4-0 and with 2:47 left in the quarter scored on a free position shot to go up 5-0. Creelyn scored her third goal with 1:28 in the quarter on a free position shot to put the Marlins up 6-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Virginia Wesleyan kept it up in the second quarter as
Creelyn Bastinelli was assisted by
Reese Morgenthaler in the first 12 seconds of the quarter. Morgenthaler got her third goal of the game at the 5:15 mark to put the Marlins up 8-0.
Madison Pfister got her first goal of the game off an assist from
Gianna Delevan to go up 9-0. Alma scored with 12 seconds in half to put the score at 9-1 going into the break.
Coming out of halftime, the Marlins scored at the 14:32 mark with a goal from Bastinelli with an assist from Delevan. Alma scored on a free position shot to bring the score to 10-2. Morgenthaler scored at the 11:29 mark for Virginia Wesleyan, and less than a minute later,
Kaila DeWees scored an unassisted goal to put the Marlins up 12-2.
Gianna Delevan scored on a man-up opportunity with an assist from Bastinelli. Then,
Madison Pfister scored with an assist from Morgenthaler to put VWU up 14-2.
Adrianna Gunther scored her first goal of the game, at the 3:18 mark with a nice feed from Morgenthaler. Gunther scored again at the 1:28 mark to end the third quarter with the Marlins up 16-2.
VWU outscored Alma 4-2 in the fourth quarter, with goals from Pfister assisted by Myers,
Daphne Myers assisted by Morgenthaler. Alma scored two straight goals to bring the score to 18-4. Finally, Morgenthaler got her sixth goal with an assist from Myers, and
Daphne Myers scored the Marlins' 20th goal to seal the win over Alma.
