The Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team (2-1) lost to non-conference opponent Methodist 14-11.
Reese Morgenthaler led the team with five goals on five shots, tallied eight draw controls, and five ground balls, and caused three turnovers.
Gianna Delevan recorded two goals on two shots with one caused turnover and teammate
Madison Pfister had two goals on two shots, with four draw controls, and caused one turnover.
The game kicked off in the first period with Virginia Wesleyan's
Gianna Delevan scoring the opening goal at 14:24, giving the Marlins a 1-0 lead. However, Methodist quickly responded just 31 seconds later with an unassisted goal to tie it at 1-1. The back-and-forth continued, as Kennedy Martin's goal at 9:12, assisted by Mikayla Ramos, put Methodist ahead 2-1. The Marlins answered with three consecutive goals from
Adrianna Gunther,
Reese Morgenthaler, and
Madison Pfister on a free position shot in the closing minute of the period to close out the first quarter with a 4-2 lead.
VWU extended their lead with two early goals, one from Morgenthaler at 14:01 and another at 11:40. However, Methodist mounted a strong comeback, sparked by Erika Henry's unassisted goal at 13:33. Reese Morgen thaler responded with a goal off a free position shot to put the Marlins up 6-3. The momentum shifted as a goal from Maddie Hagler sparked a Monarch's 5-0 run to end the quarter with an 8-6 lead.
The third period saw VWU's Morgenthaler continue her stellar performance, scoring two quick goals to tie the game at 8-8.
Gianna Delevan added another unassisted goal just moments later, giving the Marlins a 9-8 lead. However, Methodist responded quickly with an unassisted goal at 12:34, followed by a fast break score to give Methodist a 10-9 lead. The Monarchs scored their third straight, pushing the lead to 11-9. The Marlins weren't done yet, as
Daphne Myers scored at 1:58 and
Madison Pfister netted a goal with just two seconds remaining to tie the game at 11-11, heading into the final period.
In the fourth quarter, Methodist took control of the game scoring three goals in the fourth period and shutting out the Marlins to seal the 14-11 win.
