The Virginia Wesleyan University men's volleyball team (8-3, 1-1 ODAC) went 1-1 with a 3-0 win over Valley Forge. Virginia Wesleyan fell to Eastern 3-0 in game one, 24-26, 21-25, and 20-25. Then, defeated Valley Forge 3-0 winning, 25-18, 25-8, and 25-21.
Game One:
JaMarhe Wills led the Marlins with 13 kills, a .375 hitting percentage, nine digs, one block assist, and one solo block. Carlyle Campbell had four kills, with a .571 hitting percentage, recorded four block assists, one service ace, and four digs, and Jagger Ogle led the team with 14 assists, seven digs, and one service ace.
At the start of the match against Eastern University, the Marlins started strong building a 10-4 lead early in set one. However, the Eagles responded with a 7-2 run to bring the score to 12-11, but VWU countered with a 5-1 run to lead 17-12. Eastern rallied to go on a 3-0 run to cut the lead to 17-15. The two teams traded points and the Marlins were able to extend their lead to 21-18, but the Eagles outscored the Marlins 8-3 the rest of the set to win set one 26-24.
Virginia Wesleyan stepped up in the second set jumping out to a 10-3 lead. Eastern fought back with a 12-2 run to take a 15-12 lead midway through the second set. VWU responded with a 4-1 run to tie the set at 16-16, but the Eagles outscored the Marlins 9-5 to win set two 25-21.
In the third set, the two teams kept it close to bring the score to 5-4 early. However, the Eagles rallied with a 1-0 run to lead 14-5. The Marlins countered with a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 14-10. For the rest of the set the teams traded points, but Eastern was able to hold off Virginia Wesleyan's late surge to win the set 25-20.
Game Two:
JaMarhe Wills led the Marlins with 12 kills, a .421 hitting percentage, two digs, one service ace, and one block assist, Landon Brinkley had six kills, with a .417 hitting percentage, four service aces, and Ajaye Davis led the team with 14 assists, registered four kills, with a 1.000 hitting percentage, two block assists, and one dig.
The Patriots started strong jumping out to a 5-3 run, but the Marlins fought back going on a 4-0 run to lead 7-5. Virginia Wesleyan continued their hot run of play and went on an 11-6 run to lead 18-11. Valley Forge responded with a 4-0 run to cut the lead to 18-15. VWU stepped up and outscored the Patriots 7-3 to win the first set 25-18.
Valley Forge held an early 3-2 lead, but Virginia Wesleyan rallied going on a 15-2 run to lead 17-5. The Marlins were dominant in the second set outscoring the Patriots 10-3 the rest of the set to win 25-8.
The Marlins came out strong building a 4-1 lead in the third quarter, but the Patriots responded with a 5-1 run to lead 6-5. Virginia Wesleyan countered with an 8-3 run to lead 13-9, but Valley Forge outscored the Marlins 8-4 to tie the set at 17-17. VWU went on a 5-0 run to lead 22-17 and the Patriots came back with a 4-0 run, but the Marlins fought hard and went on a 3-0 run that sealed the 25-21 win.
