Natalie Dunn had three points, with two goals and one assist, and two draw controls.
The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead to start the contest, before
Camryn Gavula scored to get the Marlins on the board with an assist from
Helen Kennedy-Butler. Kennedy-Butler scored an unassisted goal to tie the game at 2-2. Averett scored two goals to retake the lead, then
Mikayla Szudera scored an unassisted goal to cut the lead to 4-3 to end the first quarter.
Kennedy-Butler scored the first goal of the second quarter to tie it up at 4 all. Averett went on a 2-1 run to lead 6-5 with a goal from Szudera assisted by Kennedy-Butler. Virginia Wesleyan scored back-to-back goals starting with a goal from Kennedy-Butler with a feed from
Natalie Dunn, then Dunn scored her first goal of the game off an assist from Kennedy-Butler to take a 7-6 lead with 9:46 left in the first half. The Cougars ended the half on a 3-1 run to lead 9-8 at the break, with the Marlins' lone goal coming from
Natalie Dunn.
Averett outscored Virginia Wesleyan 4-1 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 13-9. The Marlins' goal was an unassisted goal from
Michaela Elston.
The Marlins fought back in the fourth quarter, with Elston scoring the first goal. However, the Cougars scored three goals to lead 16-10.
Breanna Sviland scored the last goal of the contest to cut the lead down to 16-11.

Mikayla Szudera each recorded two goals in the contest, and teammate
Shaunice Rone registered six caused turnovers, four ground balls, and one draw control.
Brittneyann Hoover took the loss in the net as she had 16 goals against and five saves through 60 minutes of play.
