The Virginia Wesleyan women's lacrosse team (0-3) fell to Neumann 12-9 in their home opener.
The Marlins started strong with a goal from
Madison Pfister. However, the Knights scored four unanswered goals to take a 4-1 lead. VWU scored one more before the end of the first quarter to cut the lead to 4-2.
The second quarter was tough fought as each team scored three goals.
Michaela Elston scored the first goal of the quarter that was assisted by
Mikayla Szudera to come within one goal of the Knights. Neumann countered to go up 5-3. Szudera scored two goals to end the second quarter to bring the score to 7-5 at halftime.
Virginia Wesleyan opened the scoring after the break as
Helen Kennedy-Butler scored to cut the lead down to 7-6, but the Knights scored two straight to extend their lead to 9-6 going into the final frame.
The Marlins scored to start the fourth quarter as
Gabriella Watton assisted Pfister to come within two of the Knights at 9-7. Neumann scored three goals to lead 12-7 with 6:48 left in the game. VWU had a late surge scoring two goals to cut the lead down to 12-9, but time ran out on the Marlins as the Knights won 12-9.
Mikayla Szudera led the team on offense as she tallied three goals, three assists, and one ground ball,
Madison Pfister registered three goals on three shots, and one ground ball, and
Michaela Elston had one goal and one assist, with two caused turnovers and one ground ball.
Brittneyann Hoover recorded 10 saves in net for the Marlins.
