RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team fell to the Avenging Angels of Meredith College, 20-3, on Saturday afternoon in Raleigh, N.C.
The Angels (2-1) scored the first goal of the game not just over 30 seconds into the opening quarter and continued on a five goal run taking a 6-0 just before the end of the first quarter. Virginia Wesleyan's
Helen Kennedy-Butler managed to get a shot past the Angel keeper to put the Marlins on the board trailing 6-1 at the end of the opening quarter.
The Marlin's scored first in the second quarter as senior
Mikayla Szudera scored within the first minute of the second period. Meredith responded, however, with six more goals taking a 12-2 lead into the halftime break.
MC scored four goals in the third and four in the fourth driving its total to 20 goals in the contest.
Sophia Bourassa added a goal for the Marlins in the fourth period but the Marlins fell in the end as time expired.
Brittneyann Hoover and
Kirsten Ivory split time in the cage playing a half of action each. Hoover collected five saves while giving up 12 goals on 17 shots faced, while Ivory made four saves and gave up eight goals.
Breanna Sviland and
Natalie Dunn led the team with four ground balls and two caused turnovers each.
Virginia Wesleyan returns to action on Wednesday, March 1, when they return to Birdsong Field for their home opener agasint Neumann University at 4 PM.
