NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team opened the 2023 season with a road loss to the Captains of Christopher Newport University, 21-2, on Saturday afternoon in Newport News, Va.
The Captains (1-0) scored the first goal of the game not quite two minutes into the opening quarter. Virginia Wesleyan's
Helen Kennedy-Butler evened the score at one all about a minute later on an unassisted shot with 12:12 remaining in the opening quarter. From there, CNU went on a 12 goal run throughout the remainder of the first and second quarters holding a 13-1 lead at the halftime break.
CNU added six goals to its total in the third quarter driving the score up to 19-1. The captains added two more goals in the fourth quarter that sandwiched a VWU goal by Kennedy-Butler as the final score rested at 21-2 CNU.
Brittneyann Hoover and
Kirsten Ivory split time in the cage with BA playing 45 minutes and K the remaining 15. Hoover collected nine saves while giving up 19 goals, while Ivory made ten saves and gave up two goals.
Breanna Sviland and Hoover led the team with four ground balls each while Sviland also led in caused turnovers with three.
Helen Kennedy-Butler scored both goals for the Marlins while Mikayla Szudara tallied the only assist.
Virginia Wesleyan returns to action on Saturday, February 25, when they travel to Raleigh, NC to face the Avenging Angels of Meredith College. First draw is set for 1 PM.
