Moilanen sets program high for saves in a game; Marlins fall to Ferrum on Senior Day

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team fell to the Panthers of Ferrum College on Saturday afternoon in ODAC conference action at Birdsong Field in Virginia Beach, VA. Prior to the game six seniors were honored for their dedication to the women's lacrosse program. Recognized in the senior day ceremony were Kameron Clarke, Kayla Gush, Jordan Moilanen, Yaminah Lewis, Melissa Runo, and Mike Hairston.

FIRST HALF

  • Ferrum started the game with three goals in the opening 10:10 before the Marlins found their first goal off a Natalie Dunn shot with 17:38 remaining on the clock.
  • The Panthers added three more scores taking a 6-1 lead with 11:05 to play.
  • Virginia Wesleyan rallied in the last ten minutes of the opening half to pull within one goal, 6-5, as the teams headed into halftime. Melissa Runo, Mikayla Szudera, Helen Kennedy-Butler, and Kayla Gush all contributed a goal in the late rally.
  • Jordan Moilanen, the VWU keeper made 12 saves in the first half and was on her way to breaking her own personal best (17) and the program record (21) of saves made in a game.

SECOND HALF

  • The Panthers came out of the break scoring a goal 31 seconds into the return to play taking a 7-5 lead. 
  • Back-to-back goals from Gush and N. Dunn knotted the score at seven goals apiece.
  • Ferrum added an eighth goal but Virginia Wesleyan answered quickly with a goal from Camryn Gavula off the Szudera assist.
  • The Panthers took a three goal lead over a three minute window before a goal from Gush cut the lead to two goals with the score sitting at 11-9 in Ferrums favor.
  • Kennedy-Butler scored a 10th goal for the Marlins with 7:13 to play, after Ferrum had added a 12th, but the Panthers kept the Marlins off the scoreboard the remainder of the game while adding two more to win 14-10.

KEY STATS

  • Kayla Gush recorded a hattrick scoring three goals in the contest while adding an assist for four points.
  • Natalie Dunn and Helen Kennedy-Butler both added two goals. 
  • Jordan Moilanen (L: 2-8, 2-3) recorded a program high 23 saves in net breaking the previous total of 21 saves whlie also shattering her previous career-high of 17.. She also eclipsed 2000 career minutes in goal for the Marlins.

UP NEXT
The women's lacrosse team is back in action on Wednesday, April 14, when they travel to Bridgewater, VA, to take on the Eagles of Bridgewater College. First draw is set for 5:30 PM between the Marlins and Eagles.
