Box Score Bridgewater Run Leads Eagles past Marlins 13-10
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College women's lacrosse team endured a six-goal spurt by Bridgewater College that spanned intermission, but the BC defense kept the Marlins at bay in a 13-10 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) decision.
Bridgewater was the first to get on the board with a goal from Annie Sullivan off a Kristen Stark assist with 28:44 to play in the opening half.
The Marlins responded quickly with a goal of their own less than two minutes later off the stick of Becca Winslow.
Both teams would trade goal for goal the entire first half the majority of the first half. Virginia Wesleyan led 8-7 when Claire Palermo-Re found Jenna Devilbiss to knot the game at eight with 4:55 remaining. It would be the last tie of the contest as Bridgewater scored six straight, taking a commanding 13-8 lead with 17:41 to play in the second half.
The defenses locked down for the first 11 minutes of the second half as Bridgewater clung to the 10-8 halftime lead. Devilbiss re-ignited the scoring with two goals to make it 12-8, followed by one from Caroline Fletcher bringing the score to 13-8 with 17:41 left.
Megan Schallock and Becca Winslow attempted a Marlin rally, scoring two goals later in the half to cut the deficit to three goals, but the Eagle defense tightened up once more.
Madison Carroll finished with 16 saves, as the rest of the team scooped up 17 ground balls.
Devilbiss paced Bridgewater (7-6/2-3) with six goals and one assist while Stark contributed two goals and two assists.
Becca Winslow posted a career-high five goals to lead the Marlins as Marie Lerch scored a pair.
Virginia Wesleyan (2-10/1-4) will head to Shenandoah University (3-10/1-4) on Saturday for a 1 p.m. ODAC start.
