Men's Tennis Wins First Contest in Hilton Head

HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College men's tennis team took on St. Olaf from St. Paul, Minn. on Sunday in Hilton Head, SC, capturing an 8-1 victory.

After having a morning match vs. the University of St. Thomas suspended early in doubles due to rain, the Marlin men took the courts at Chaplin Park to take on Central Region foe, St. Olaf, to start play in Hilton Head.

The Marlins came out of the gate strong and took two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles.  Kenny Downing and Tyler Chang put the first point on the scoreboard by taking their match 8-3.  Shortly thereafter, Drew Tomajczyk and Brenden Kelleher earned their point at No. 3 doubles 8-5.

In singles, senior Tyler Chang made quick work at No. 6 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win.  The Marlins ended up sweeping the singles with three of the matches going to deciding-match tiebreakers.

With the win the Marlins improve to 4-2 on the season.  Next up for the team will be a ranked Allegheny College squad on Tuesday at 11:15 a.m. at Chaplin Park in Hilton Head.
