The Virginia Wesleyan University men's volleyball team (19-9, 8-7 ODAC) lost a five-set heartbreaker to conference opponent Randolph College.
The Marlins offense was led by James Cromwell-Young, who had 12 kills, a .706 hitting percentage, one dig, and led the team with four block assists. JaMarhe Wills had 13 kills, with eight digs, two block assists, and one assist. Grant Younie recorded 13 kills as well, with 11 digs, and two assists.
Virginia Wesleyan came out strong and built a 7-5 lead, but the Wildcats went on a 3-0 run to take an 8-7 lead. However, the Marlins began to gain momentum and outscored Randolph 15-6 to take a 22-14 lead. The Wildcats fought back and brought the score to 23-19, but VWU won set one 25-20.
Randolph came out hot in set two, jumping out to a 6-4 lead early, but Virginia Wesleyan rallied to go on a 10-3 run to take a 14-9 lead. The two teams traded points, until the Marlins rallied late in the set to go on and win the set 25-15.
In the third set, Randolph grabbed the momentum early and built an early 9-4 lead. The Wildcats kept up the pressure and led 19-9 late in the set and went on to win set three 25-14.
The Wildcats kept up the pressure in the fourth set, as they jumped out to a 14-6 lead early. The Marlins offense fought back late, but Randolph forced a fifth set by winning set four 25-17.
In the fifth set, the Wildcats came out strong to take a 7-4 lead, but the Marlins went on a 4-1 run to tie the set at 8-8. The Wildcats went on a 3-1 run to lead 11-9, but VWU countered right back with a 4-0 run to take a 13-11 lead. Randolph found another gear and went on a 6-2 run the rest of the set to win set five 17-15 to win the match.
