The Virginia Wesleyan women's lacrosse team (4-2) used a dominant second and third quarter to pull away from Lycoming, earning a 16-7 victory.
Melissa Dolt got the win to put her at 4-2 on the season, made four saves, and allowed seven goals.
Creelyn Bastinelli led the offense with four goals, two assists, with six shots on goal, caused two turnovers, had three draw controls, two ground balls, and was 2-for-3 for 8-meter shots. Gianna Delevan tallied three goals, with two assists, on three shots, had one ground ball, and caused one turnover. Kenna Duplechin registered four goals on seven shots, grabbed three ground balls, caused three turnovers, and had four draw controls.
Lycoming struck first as Riley Block scored three early goals to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead midway through the opening quarter. The Marlins responded late in the period behind Reese Morgenthaler, who netted three consecutive goals, including a free-position strike, to even the score at 3-3 before the end of the first quarter.
Virginia Wesleyan carried that momentum into the second quarter and took control of the game. Maddisen Selvage opened the scoring with an unassisted goal before Creelyn Bastinelli followed with a free-position tally to give the Marlins their first lead. Kenna Duplechin added back-to-back goals during the period, including a man-up free-position score, and Bastinelli capped the half with another man-up goal with eight seconds remaining to send Virginia Wesleyan into the break with an 8-3 advantage.
The Marlins continued their offensive surge in the third quarter, scoring seven times in the frame to put the game out of reach. Gianna Delevan started the run with a goal off an assist from Bastinelli and then assisted on Selvage's second goal moments later. Bastinelli and Delevan each added additional goals, while Duplechin scored twice in the quarter as Virginia Wesleyan extended its lead to 15-4 entering the final period.
Lycoming managed a brief push in the fourth quarter with three goals, including two from Block, but the Marlins answered late when Delevan found the back of the net off an assist from Daphne Myers to seal the 16-7 victory.
