The Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team (5-4, 0-1 ODAC) showed early fight but couldn't keep pace as the Marlins fell 22-6 to Shenandoah in their ODAC opener.
Morgenthaler led the way with four goals and an assist, while Delevan (one goal, one assist) and Duplechin (one goal) rounded out the scoring. Myers added an assist and contributed on the ground with multiple possessions.
The Marlins came out strong in the first quarter, with Reese Morgenthaler setting the tone early. She opened the scoring on a free-position goal and later added two more in the period, including a connection with Gianna Delevan to keep things close. Virginia Wesleyan matched Shenandoah's intensity early, trailing just 5-3 after one quarter behind Morgenthaler's hat trick.
In the second quarter, the Marlins continued to find moments offensively despite a surge from Shenandoah. Kenna Duplechin capitalized on a man-up opportunity off an assist from Daphne Myers, and Delevan added a goal in the closing seconds off a feed from Morgenthaler. Virginia Wesleyan showed resilience late in the half, scoring twice in the final 1:30 to head into the break with momentum despite a 15-5 deficit.
After halftime, the Marlins looked to regroup defensively while searching for offensive rhythm. Virginia Wesleyan created opportunities, including a strong effort from Morgenthaler, but was held off the scoreboard in the third quarter.
In the final period, Morgenthaler struck again for her fourth goal of the day, continuing her standout performance. The Marlins kept battling through the final whistle, with goalkeeper Melissa Dolt making key saves down the stretch to slow several Shenandoah chances.
