The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team (12-9, 6-6 ODAC) defeated ODAC opponent Randolph 88-66.
Brianna Long led the Marlins, scoring 18 points shooting 6-for-8 from the field, shot 6-for-11 from the free throw line, and grabbed eight rebounds.
Sydney Turner tallied 18 points shooting 4-for-6 from the field, shooting 10-for-10 from the charity stripe, with two rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
Keira Bagwell had 12 points, shooting 5-for-10 from the field, 2-for-6 from beyond the arc, had one rebound, two assists, and two steals.
Bre Robinson registered 11 points, shooting 4-for-4 from the field, 1-for-1 from deep, and 2-for-3 from the free throw line, had four rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
A slow start to the game, as the score was 1-1 at the 4:58 mark in the first quarter. Over the next four minutes, the Marlins' offense awoke and went on an 8-4 run to hold an 8-5 lead with 1:16 left in the quarter. Each team scored a basket to finish out the quarter to give the Marlins a 10-7 lead heading into the second frame.
The Wildcats came out in the second quarter hot, going on a 6-2 run to lead 13-12 at the 7:58 mark. However, the rest of the quarter, each team scored nine points to give Randolph a 22-21 lead at the break.
Coming out of halftime, the Marlins came out hot, going on a 9-2 run to take a 30-24 lead at the 7:13 mark in the game. Both offenses caught fire as they each made two threes in a row to bring the score to 36-32, then VWU went on an 8-4 run to close out the third quarter with a 44-36 lead.
The Marlins started the final frame with a 5-2 run to extend their lead to 49-38 at the 7:49 mark in the fourth quarter. However, the Wildcats countered with a 7-4 run to cut the lead to 53-45 with 5:15 left in the fourth quarter. Over the next four minutes, Virginia Wesleyan went on an 11-4 run to extend their lead to 64-49 with 1:06 left in the game. In the final minute of the game, Randolph outscored VWU 4-2, but was unable to mount a comeback to give the Marlins the 66-53 win over Randolph.
