The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team (12-10, 6-7 ODAC) was defeated by ODAC opponent Guildford (18-4, 8-4 ODAC), 63-57.
Bre Robinson lead the team with 16 points, shooting 4-for-9 from the field, 8-for-8 from the free throw line, four rebounds, and had two steals.
Brianna Long had 14 points, shooting 5-for-9 from the field, 4-for-7 from the free throw line, grabbed 11 rebounds, and had two steals.
Sydney Turner also tallied 12 points to the board, shooting 5-for-12 from the field, 1-for-2 from the free throw line, seven rebounds, and stole the ball twice.
The game started out with both teams going shot for shot within the first 6 minutes of play, leaving the score at an even 6-6. However, Guilford was able to pull ahead with 4:38 left on the clock, going on a close 9-8 run to put the score at 15-14 going into the second quarter.
Brianna Long opened the second quarter on a strong note, tying the game at 15-15 within the first 30 seconds. The Quakers quickly responded with a 14-8 run over the next several minutes to close out the first half with a 31-23 lead.
The Marlins came out firing after halftime, outscoring Guilford 15-7 in the first eight minutes of play to tie the game at 38-38 with 2:19 remaining in the third quarter.The Quakers responded by going on a 6-2 run in the last minutes of the quarter to bring the score to 44-40 going into the fourth.
The Marlins fought hard within the first three minutes of the fourth quarter to bring the score back to an even 44-44. The Quakers responded with a 13-5 run over the next four minutes, building a 57-49 lead with 4:18 remaining on the clock. Within the dwindling minutes of the game, the Marlins went on a 6-1 run, closing the gap and bringing the score to 58-55 with 39 seconds left in the game. In the end, Guilford sealed the victory with a 5-1 run to close out the game, 63-57.
