The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team (11-9, 5-6 ODAC) was defeated by conference opponent Shenandoah 67-60.
Brianna Long had a career night, scoring 32 points, which is the second time she has scored 30+ points in her career, she shot 13-for-19 from the floor, going 6-for-6 from the free throw line, grabbed 12 rebounds, one assists, and one steal.
Sydney Turner had 10 points shooting 3-for-8 from the field, 4-for-7 from the charity stripe, had five rebounds, one assists, and two steals, and teammate
Keira Bagwell had eight points shooting 3-for-11 from the field, 3-for-8 from beyond the arc, four rebounds, and three steals.
The Hornets took an early 4-0 lead to start the game, but the Marlins countered with an 8-0 run to lead 8-4. Shenanoah responded with a 7-0 run to take an 11-8 lead at the 3:33 mark. Each team scored four points the rest of the quarter to bring the score to 15-12.
The Hornets came out on fire, going on a 12-2 run to start the second quarter, to hold a 27-14 lead with five minutes left in the half. Virginia Wesleyan responded, outscoring the Hornets 10-8 to cut the lead to 35-24 at halftime.
Coming out of the break, the Marlins came out hot, going on a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 35-29 at the 8:53 mark. Shenandoah responded with a 7-3 to increase their lead to 42-32. Each team scored ten points in the final 4:12 of the quarter to bring the score to 52-42 heading into the final frame.
VWU started the fourth quarter strong, going on an 8-2 run to cut the lead to 54-50 at the 6:44 mark in the quarter. Shenandoah countered with a 6-2 run to cushion their lead to 60-52 with 5:15 in the game. Over the next four minutes, the Marlins went on a 5-4 run to cut the lead to 64-57 with 44 seconds left in the game. In the final minute, each team scored three points as VWU was unable to mount a comeback to give Shenandoah the win at 67-60.
