Virginia Wesleyan wasted no time setting the tone, erupting for seven first-quarter goals. Following a yellow card assessed to Southern Virginia at the 11:17 mark,
Creelyn Bastinelli capitalized on the man-up opportunity, finishing a feed from
Gianna Delevan at 9:58 to open the scoring.
Reese Morgenthaler struck just over a minute later off a draw control, and after another Southern Virginia card,
Daphne Myers converted another man-up chance off an assist from
Kenna Duplechin to make it 3-0.
Delevan added an unassisted goal midway through the frame, and Morgenthaler followed with a free-position finish at 5:41. Bastinelli notched her second of the quarter at 4:07, and in the closing seconds
Maddisen Selvage buried a pass from Bastinelli with 13 ticks left, giving the Marlins a commanding 7-0 lead after one.
Southern Virginia found the net twice in the second quarter, but the Marlins continued to answer. Delevan scored unassisted at 6:29, and Morgenthaler added back-to-back goals at 3:15 and 1:26 to push the advantage to 10-1 before halftime.
Virginia Wesleyan opened the third quarter with another draw control win and turned it into Delevan's third goal of the day at 12:47. After a Southern Virginia free-position goal,
Naomi Schneider responded quickly with an unassisted strike at 10:02. Delevan converted a man-up opportunity at 8:30, and Morgenthaler capped the quarter's scoring for VWU with her fifth goal at 4:25, sending the Marlins into the final period ahead 14-4.
