The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team (13-10, 7-7 ODAC) completes second half comeback in a 67-59 win over EMU.
The Marlins offense was led by
Brianna Long who tallied 23 points, shot 5-for-8 from the field, and 13-for-20 from the free throw line, she also tallied her 18th double-double this season as she had 17 rebounds, along with one block and three steals.
Maesyn Blaylock registered 14 points, shooting 3-for-7 from the field, and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line, had five rebounds, and one steal.
Bre Robinson reached double-digit points as she scored 11 points, shooting 4-for-8 from the field, and 3-for-4 from the charity stripe, and added six rebounds, two assists, and one block.
The Marlins scored the first points of the game, but EMU responded and went on a 6-1 run to take a 6-3 lead with 6:54 left in the first quarter. Over the next three minutes, the Royals went on a 6-3 run to hold a 12-6 lead over VWU with 3:22 in the quarter. EMU outscored the Marlins 8-6 the rest of the quarter to hold a 20-12 lead heading into the second frame.
Virginia Wesleyan started the second quarter hot, going on a 7-2 run to cut the lead to 22-19, but the Royals responded with a 6-0 run to extend their lead to 28-19 at the 4:20 mark in the second quarter. The Marlins rallied in the last four minutes of the quarter, going on a 7-2 run to cut the lead to 30-26 heading into the break.
Coming out of halftime, the Royals came out strong, going on a 9-3 run to increase their lead to 39-29 at the 6:34 mark in the second quarter. After a 90-second scoring drought, the Marlins' offense took off, going on a 15-6 run to cut the lead to 45-44 by the end of the third quarter.
In the final frame of the game, Virginia Wesleyan's offense exploded, going on a 12-4 run to take a 56-49 lead with 5:19 on the clock. The Royals responded with a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 58-55, but the Marlins finished out the game strong, outscoring the host 9-4 to seal the 67-59 win.
