The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team (13-10, 7-7 ODAC) was defeated by conference opponent Randolph-Macon 54-39 on the road.
The Marlins offense was led by
Sydney Turner, who scored 13 points, shooting 4-for-7 from the field, and 5-for-6 from the free throw line, grabbed eight rebounds, one block, and two steals.
Brianna Long recorded eight points, shooting 3-for-8 from the floor, 2-for-4 from the free throw line, collected 15 rebounds, and had one block.
Keira Bagwell scored six points, shooting 2-for-4 from the field, 1-for-3 from beyond the arc, 1-for-4 from the free throw line, three rebounds, one assist, and one steal.
Virginia Wesleyan started the game well, going on a 6-2 run to begin the game, but the rest of the quarter, the Yellow Jackets outscored the Marlins 5-4 to cut the lead to 10-7 at the break.
Randolph-Macon came out in the second quarter on fire, going on an 8-0 run to take a 15-10 lead at the 7:39 mark. The Marlins scored their first point of the quarter to stop the run, but RMC outscored VWu 12-4 the rest of the quarter to lead 27-14 heading into the break.
A slow start after halftime, as the first bucket wasn't scored until the 8:34 mark by RMC. However, the Marlins scored their first shot at the 6:25 in the third quarter that sparked a 13-3 run over the next four minutes to cut the lead to 33-27 with 2:34 left in the third quarter. Randolph-Macon finished the third quarter on a 4-1 run to increase its advantage to 37-28.
The Marlins started the final frame strong, with a 5-2 run to bring the score to 39-33 with 8:30 left in the game. However, RMC countered with a 13-0 run to extend their lead to 52-33 at the 4:43 mark. Virginia Wesleyan ended the game strong with a 6-2 run, but could not complete the comeback and fell 54-39.
