The Virginia Wesleyan women's basketball team (11-8, ODAC 5-5) lost to the No. 5-ranked team in the country, Washington and Lee (19-0, ODAC 10-0), by a close score of 64-59.
Brianna Long led the team with 15 points, shooting 6-for-8 from the field, 3-for-4 from the free throw line, and had 12 rebounds.
Bre Robinson added 11 points, shooting 5-for-10 from the field, and grabbed one rebound.
Maesyn Blaylock also tallied nine points to the score, shooting 4-for-7 from the field, 1-for-1 from the free throw line, one rebound, and had three steals.
The Marlins started out hot, going on an 10-7 run early in the first quarter, but the Generals went on a 5-2 run to cut the lead to an even 12-12 at the 2:11 mark. The Marlins outscored the Generals 2-1 over the next two minutes to hold the lead at 13-14 going into the second quarter. The second quarter started out blazing with a 9-6 lead from the Marlins, bringing the score to 19-23 midway through the period. The Generals responded quickly by outscoring the Marlins 7-2 over the last few minutes of the quarter to bring the score to a close 26-25 going into halftime.
Coming out of the break, the Generals held onto their lead for the first six minutes, although the Marlins kept the gap small. At the 4:44 mark, the Marlins make a shot to bring the score back to an even 36-36. Washington & Lee responds to this by going on a 12-8 run in the last few minutes to widen the gap to 48-44 going into the last quarter. Virginia Wesleyan starts the final frame strong, immediately going on a 8-4 run to tie the score to 52-52 with 6:08 left in the game. The Generals outscored the Marlins 12-7 over the next few minutes left in the game to take home the close 64-59 win.
