The Virginia Wesleyan University men's volleyball team (2-0, 1-0 ODAC) swept its two opponents today. Beating Shenandoah 25-17, 25-21, and 25-14, and defeated Geneva 25-16, 25-14, and 25-21.
Game One:
The Marlins' offense was led by
JaMarhe Wills, who had 15 kills with a .464 hitting percentage, three assists, two service aces, two digs, and one block assist.
Siah Hall had a day with eight kills, with a .313 hitting percentage, two assists, one service ace, one block assist, and six digs.
Carlyle Campbell recorded six kills with a .333 hitting percentage, two service aces, one block assist, and one dig, and teammate
Ajaye Davis led the team with 32 assists, had two service aces, and four digs.
Virginia Wesleyan started the game hot, jumping out to an 11-1 lead to start the set, but the Hornets countered with a 4-1 to bring the score to 12-5. The two teams traded points to bring the score to 18-8. However, Shenandoah went on a 5-2 run to cut the Marlins' lead to 20-13, but VWU went on to outscore the Hornets 5-4 the rest of the set to seal the 25-17 win in set one.
A close start to the second set saw the teams tied at 6-6 early. The Hornets broke the deadlock, going on a 4-1 run to lead 10-7. However, Virginia Wesleyan responded with a 7-0 run to take a 14-10 lead midway through the set. SU responded with a 3-1 run to cut the lead to 15-13, but the Marlins countered with a 5-1 run to lead 20-14. Shenandoah went on a 3-0 run to bring the score to 20-17. The two teams traded points the rest of the way and gave VWU the 25-21 win in the second set.
In the third set, the Hornets jumped out to a 6-3 lead early, but the Marlins rallied with a 13-2 run to open up their lead to 16-8. The two teams traded the next seven points until the Marlins went on a 3-0 run to lead 22-12. VWU outscored the visitors 3-2 the rest of the set to seal the 25-14 win over Shenandoah.
Game Two:
Siah Hall led the team in the second game with nine kills with a .350 hitting percentage, 11 digs, three service aces, and one block assist.
JaMarhe Wills registered eight kills, two service aces, and five digs.
Grant Younie had five kills, five digs, one service ace, and one block assist, and teammate
Ajaye Davis tallied a team best 26 assists, with five digs, and one solo block.
The first set was a close contest as the Golden Tornadoes found themselves up 5-4, but VWU responded with a 7-2 run to take an 11-7 lead. Geneva countered with a 3-1 run to cut the lead to 12-10, however, the Marlins responded with a 5-1 run to extend their lead to 17-11. The Marlins kept up the pressure the rest of the set and outscored the Golden Tornadoes 8-5 the rest of the set to win 25-16.
Geneva came out strong in the second set, jumping out to a 3-1 lead. However, the Marlins countered with a 6-0 run to take a 7-3 lead. Virginia Wesleyan kept up the pressure and outscored the Golden Tornadoes 8-6 to hold a 15-9 lead midway through the set. The Marlins' offense was dominant the rest of the set, outscoring Geneva 10-5 to go on and win the set 25-14.
In the third set, Virginia Wesleyan kept its momentum and built a 6-2 run early. Geneva countered with a 5-2 run to cut the lead to 8-7. The Marlins responded going on an 8-3 run to extend their lead to 16-10, but the Golden Tornadoes rallied and went on a 5-0 run to bring the score to 16-15. Over the next nine points, Geneva outscored the Marlins 5-4 to tie the set at 20-20, but VWU finished strong outscored the visitors 5-1 to seal the 25-21 win.
