Stellar Pitching Push Marlins Past Washington & Lee In Key Conference Matchup

The Virginia Wesleyan University baseball team (10-17, 6-13 ODAC) defeated Washington & Lee 3-1 in game one and 6-3 in game two. The Marlins pitching and defense played excellent and allowed a total of four runs, and tallied 11 strikeouts on the day.

Game One:
Nathan Bryant did well and was 2-for-3 at bat, Mathew Owens was 1-for-4 with an RBI, and a stolen base, and Joshua Jones was 1-for-2 and scored a run.

Jack McDowell pitched well on the mound as he pitched 7.0 innings, allowed three hits, no runs, and had one strikeout. Zach Miller recorded his second save of the year as he pitched 1.1 innings, allowed zero runs, and zero hits, and registered one stirkeout.

In the top of the third inning, Virginia Wesleyan broke a scoreless deadlock with a combination of aggressive baserunning and timely hitting. Keegan Megaro led off with a single to right center, setting the stage for a rally. Marcel Whitfield followed with a walk, pushing Megaro into scoring position. John Bastiaans laid down a successful sacrifice bunt, advancing both runners. The inning's pivotal moment came when Nick Valentin reached on an error by the third baseman, allowing both Megaro and Whitfield to cross the plate. The runs were unearned, but they gave the Marlins a 2–0 lead over Washington and Lee.

The Marlins extended their lead in the top of the sixth. Joshua Jones was hit by a pitch to start the frame and moved to second on a single by Clay Clarke. After a sacrifice bunt by Nathan Bryant moved both runners into scoring position, Owon Mathews delivered with a clutch single up the middle, driving in Jones. Clarke advanced to third on the play, but the Marlins settled for just one more run in the inning, pushing their lead to 3–0. That would prove to be enough as Virginia Wesleyan secured the win in the opening game.

Game Two:
Nick Valentin led the offense in game two going 3-for-4 with a double, scored one run, tallied two RBI, and stole two bases Nathan Bryant was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI, and John Bastiaans went 1-for-5 with a double, and two RBI.

Sean Keener recorded the win in game two and pitched 5.1 innings, allowed seven hits, two runs, and struckout five, and teammate Matthew Weber came in relief and pitched 3.1 innings, allowed two hits, one run, with five strikeouts, and tallied his first save of the season.

Virginia Wesleyan wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard in game two. Marcel Whitfield drew a leadoff walk in the top of the first and quickly advanced to second on a wild pitch. After a groundout moved him to third, Nick Valentin came through with a single up the middle to bring him home. The early offensive pressure gave the Marlins a 1–0 advantage out of the gate.

In the second inning, VWU capitalized again on Washington and Lee's defensive miscues and added to their lead. Bryce Folmar reignited the inning with a walk, and Whitfield kept the pressure on with a single through the left side. Then, John Bastiaans delivered a two-run double, scoring both Folmar and Whitfield, though he was thrown out trying to stretch it to third. Still, the damage was done as the Marlins went up 3–0.

The offense continued to click in the top of the third. Valentin opened the inning with a single, and Ty James followed with one of his own to put two on with no outs. A sacrifice bunt by Joshua Jones moved both runners into scoring position. Nathan Bryant then stepped up and smashed a double to left center, plating both James and Valentin. The Marlins had now doubled their lead to 5–2, keeping the pressure squarely on the Generals.

Virginia Wesleyan added another run in the fourth to cushion their lead. After a groundout, Whitfield drew yet another walk and promptly advanced to second on a wild pitch. Although Bastiaans flew out without advancing the runner, Valentin delivered once again with a deep double to left field, allowing Whitfield to score. That RBI pushed the Marlins' lead to 6–2,

The Generals were able to score a run in the bottom of the eighth, but that score would hold as they finished off a sweep of the doubleheader with another strong offensive showing.
