The Virginia Wesleyan baseball team (10-18, 6-14 ODAC) suffered an 11-1 loss to the Tigers of Hampden-Sydney in conference play.
Nick Valentin led the Marlins as he went 2-for-3 at bat; and
Owen Mathews scored the lone run of the day for VWU.
Hampden-Sydney had a strong start to the first inning with two runs and stretched that lead to 4-0 in the third inning. Marlin pitcher,
Matthew Weber was efficient in innings four through six, keeping the Tigers to no runs; but the Marlins struggled to convert at bat.
At the bottom of the sixth,
Nick Valentin singled on a bunt, and
Nathan Bryant walked to put runners on first and second; but the home team was unable to score.
The Tigers continued their success as they performed well in the top of the seventh with four hits and three runs to extend their lead to 7-0.
In the bottom of the seventh,
Owen Mathews was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Then,
Clay Clarke singled to the right field, advancing Mathews to third. Mathews finished the play as he ran home on a throwing error by the Tigers' second baseman to put the Marlins on the board for the first time in the game.
Hampden-Sydney continued to dominate, scoring three more runs in the eighth inning and one more in the ninth while keeping the Marlins from scoring to seal the 11-1 win over Virginia Wesleyan.
Next, the Marlins will face Roanoke College on Saturday in a doubleheader series with game times set for 12 and 3 p.m.
