Baseball Goes 2-0 in Doubleheader at Ferrum

The Virginia Wesleyan baseball team (6-11, 2-8 ODAC) won 9-8 and 10-3 in a doubleheader at Ferrum College. 

Game One:

Edgar Harwood led the Marlins as he went 3-for-5 at bat with two runs and four RBI. Keegan Megaro recorded two hits in five at bats and had one run and two RBI. Matthew Weber recorded the pitching win for VWU.

Clay Clarke singled to left field to start the game and advanced to second when Nick Valentin grounded out to the short stop; then Ty James singled to put two runners on base. Edgar Harwood was up next for the Marlins and homered to put the Marlins up 3-0. 

Ferrum responded with four runs in the bottom of the first and added another run at the bottom of the second to lead VWU 5-3. 

Josh Goodrich singled to left field to begin the top of the fourth; and then Keegan Megaro reached first on an error, which advanced Goodrich to second and then to third on a throwing error. Next at bat was Nick Sylvester, who singled to right field, sending Keegan Megaro to second and scoring Goodrich. Megaro advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored a run off a single from Joshua Jones. John Bastiaans doubled down the right field line to score Jones to put VWU in front of Ferrum 6-5. 

Ferrum regained their lead in the bottom of the fourth with three runs, bringing the score to 8-6.

After two scoreless innings, the Marlins had a successful seventh inning. Nick Valentin doubled to center field, and then Ty James was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Edgar Harwood singled to right field, advancing James to third and scoring Nick Valentin. Up next was Keegan Megaro, who singled to right field to score Harwood and James, bringing the score to 9-8 for the Marlins. The eighth and ninth innings remained scoreless, sealing the 9-8 VWU win. 

Game Two: 

Nick Valentin led the Marlins as he went 2-for-4 at bat and tallied one run and two RBI. Nick Sylvester went 2-for-5 at bat and also tallied a run and two RBI. Sean Keener recorded the win as pitcher. 

Ferrum scored the first run of the game to lead 1-0. In the top of the third, Clay Clarke walked, and John Bastiaans was hit by a pitch. The runners advanced to second and third when Nick Valentin grounded out to the pitcher. Edgar Harwood doubled to left center, scoring both Bastiaans and Clarke to put the Marlins ahead 2-1. 

Ferrum reversed the lead as they scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to lead 3-2; but the Marlins responded with a single from Keegan Megaro, who then advanced to second on a single by Nick Sylvester and scored on an error to tie the game at 3-3.

John Bastiaans was hit by a pitch to begin the seventh inning. Then Nick Valentin walked, and Ty James reached first on a fielder's choice as Bastiaans was out. Edgar Harwood walked, advancing all the runners and loading all bases. Next up was Keegan Megaro, who continued his successful play with a single through the left side to score Valentin and advance all the runners and put the Marlins ahead 4-3. Nick Sylvester also singled through the left side, scoring both Harwood and James, which stretched the VWU lead to 6-3. Nate Bryant continued the Marlin momentum with another single to load the bases. Joshua Jones reached first on fielder's choice, in which Megaro was out, but Bryant and Sylvester advanced. The next two batters, Clay Clarke and John Bastiaans, walked which scored two more runs for the Marlins; and Nick Valentin ended with a double down the left field line, scoring the final two runs of the game. The final score of the contest was 10-3. 

Next, the Marlins will host the University of Lynchburg on Wednesday, April 2, at 3:30 p.m.
