The Virginia Wesleyan University men's volleyball team (14-5, 5-3 ODAC) defeated conference opponent Lynchburg 3-1, winning 25-15, 26-14, 22-25, and 25-23.
The Marlins offense was led by
Christian Harris, as he had 20 kills, with a .406 hitting percentage, eight digs, and one service ace,
JaMarhe Wills had 13 kills, eight digs, and three block assists, and
Matthew Sheppard had six kills, two assists, one service ace, 11 digs, and two block assists.
The Hornets scored the first two points of set one, but the Marlins rallied to hold an 8-4 lead. They went on to extend their lead to 18-10 with a 10-6 run. Lynchburg scored the next three points to bring the score to 18-13, but the Marlins countered with a 7-2 run to win the first set.
A close second set, saw the two teams tied at 9-9 with the teams tying seven times during that span. The Hornets went on a 7-4 run to take a 16-13 lead and continued their good fortune to lead 20-15. However, Virginia Wesleyan's offense kicked it into overdrive and went on a 9-3 run on the back of five kills from
Christian Harris to take a 24-23 lead. VWU went on to win the set 26-24.
A close start to set three as Lynchburg got ahead but VWU came back to tie the set at 6-6. The Hornets went on a 7-1 run to take a 13-7 lead over Virginia Wesleyan. However, the Marlins rallied with a 10-3 run to lead the set 17-16. Lynchburg countered going on a 9-5 run to win the set 25-22.
Lynchburg carried their momentum into the fourth set and built a 5-1 lead early. Virginia Wesleyan chipped away at the visitors lead with a 6-3 run to cut the deficit to 8-7. The Marlins continued their good play and strung together an 8-3 run to lead 15-11. The Hornets countered with a 5-3 run to bring the score to 18-16, but the Marlins responded with a 4-0 run to lead 22-16. Lynchburg outscored the Marlins 7-3 down the stretch, but VWU won the set 25-23.
