The Virginia Wesleyan University men's volleyball team (9-5, 2-3 ODAC) was defeated by Roanoke 3-0, losing 21-25, 19-25, and 16-25.
Matthew Sheppard led the offense with eight kills, one assist, nine digs, and five block assists.
JaMarhe Wills recorded nine kills, with a .421 hitting percentage, three digs, and one block assist, and
Christian Harris had five kills, one service ace, three digs, and one assist.
The Marlins jumped out to a 2-0 lead and went on to hold a 5-3 lead, but the Maroons went on a 4-1 run to lead 7-6. Virginia Wesleyan responded with a 3-1 run to take a 9-8 lead. Roanoke responded with a 5-0 run to lead 13-9. The two teams traded points until the Marlins went on a 3-0 run to bring the score to 20-19. However, Roanoke ended the set with a 4-2 run to lead 25-21.
The Maroons stepped up in the second set and built an 11-5 run on the back of a 6-0 run. However, Virginia Wesleyan responded with their own 6-0 run to tie the set at 11-11. Roanoke responded by outscoring the Marlins 12-5 to hold a 23-16 lead. VWU went on a 3-2 run but the deficit was too great and Roanoke won set two 25-19.
In the third set, Roanoke's offense erupted with a 9-2 run to start the set. The Marlins chipped away and brought the score to 13-9, but the Maroons went on a 6-2 run to lead 19-11. VWU responded with a 4-1 run to cut the lead to 20-15, but the Maroons ended the set with a 5-1 run to win 25-16.
