Marlins Cruise Past Meredith 72-54

The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team (6-4, 1-1 ODAC) defeated non-conference opponent Meredith 72-54.

Brianna Long led the team with a double-double scoring 21 points, shooting 10-for-16 from the field, grabbed 14 rebounds, had one block, and five steals. Bre Robinson had 12 points, shooting 6-for-11 from the field, grabbed five rebounds, and had a steal and teammate Jaiden Hunter had seven points, shooting 3-for-5 from the field, had six rebounds, one assists, one block, and two steals.

Virginia Wesleyan had an excellent start to the game, going on a 9-0 run in the first two minutes. Meredith responded, going on an 11-7 run to cut the lead to 16-11 over the next four minutes of play. However, the Marlins finished out the first quarter with a 9-2 run to hold a 25-13 lead after the first ten minutes of play.

The Angel came out in the second quarter and made two quick buckets to go on a 5-0 run and bring the score to 25-18, but VWU responded with a 5-0 run of their own to increase their lead to 30-18. Meredith found their groove over the next five minutes and went on an 8-2 run to cut the Marlins' lead to 32-26 heading into the break.

Virginia Wesleyan came out on fire in the second half, as they held the host scoreless in the first five minutes of the third quarter and scored 13 points to extend their lead to 45-26. Over the next five minutes, the Angels outscored the Marlins 10-9 to bring the score to 54-36 heading into the final frame.

Meredith started well, going on a 5-2 run to start the fourth quarter, but the Marlins countered with a 6-0 run to increase their lead to 62-41. The rest of the half, the two teams traded points with the Angels slightly outscoring VWU 13-10, but clutch free throws preserved the Marlins' lead and secured the 72-54 road win.
