Women’s Basketball Falls to Shenandoah in 62-61 Nailbiter

The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team (5-2, 0-1 ODAC) lost to Shenandoah 62-61 on a last-minute layup.

Bre Robinson led the offense with 24 points, shooting 11-for-20 from the floor, with two rebounds, and four steals. Brianna Long had 16 points, shooting 7-for-10 from the field, and nine rebounds. Maesyn Blaylock had seven points shooting 3-for-11 from the floor, 1-for-3 from beyond the arc, six rebounds, seven assists, and five steals.

Shenandoah started well, jumping out to a 9-3 lead in the first five minutes of the game, but Virginia Wesleyan finished the quarter with an 8-4 run to cut the visitors' lead to 13-11.

The Marlins started the second quarter on fire, going on a 9-1 run to hold a 20-14 lead at the 7:49 mark in the second quarter. The two teams traded points over the next five minutes to give the Marlins a 28-23 lead with 2:14 left in the first half. However, the Hornets rallied and ended the half with a 10-0 run to lead 33-28.

VWU came out of the break strong, going on a 6-2 run to take a 35-34 lead over Shenandoah. The teams could not be separated and found themselves tied at 44-44 with 1:50 left in the third quarter. However, Virginia Wesleyan scored the last two buckets of the quarter to hold a 48-44 lead heading into the final frame.

In the fourth quarter, both teams kept it close, with the Hornets outscored the Marlins 7-6 to bring the score to 51-54 with 5:01 left in the game. Shenandoah pounced and went on a 6-0 run to hold a 57-54 lead at the 1:48 mark. The Marlins rallied and went on a 7-3 run to take a 61-60 lead with three seconds left in the game. However, the Hornets had a game-winning layup to win the game 62-61.
