Marlins Battle Hard in 61-56 Loss to CNU

The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team (5-4, 1-1 ODAC) lost to Christopher Newport University (9-2) at home on Tuesday, December 16th, by a score of 61-56. 

Brianna Long led the way with 16 points, shooting 6-for-6 from the field, 4-for-4 from the free throw line, one steal and had 13 rebounds. Bre Robinson also added 14 points to the board, shooting 5-for-11 from the field, 4-for-4 from the free throw line, two steals, and four rebounds. Sydney Turner also tallied up the score by adding 10 points, shooting 1-for-7 from the field, 8-for-11 from the free throw line, one steal, and 10 rebounds. 

The Captains got the upper hand and went for a 8-0 run, leaving the score at 8-0 with 6:37 left in the first quarter. Bre Robinson made the Marlins first shot of the night with an assist from Maesyn Blaylock to bring the score to 8-2 at 6:24. The Captains held the lead with a run of 11-6 in the last six minutes of the first quarter, leading us into the second quarter with a score of 19-6.

Coming into the second quarter, the Marlins started strong, going on a 6-2 run to bring the score to 23-12 at 7:34. The Captains respond by going on a 16-6 run in final minutes of the second quarter, bringing the score to 39-17 going into halftime. 

Coming out into the second half with a score of 39-17, the Marlins came out strong going on a 12-4 run in the first five minutes to bring the score to 43-29 with 5:27 left in the third quarter. Continuing through the last half of the third, the Marlins continue to chip away at the score by going on a 11-5 run to bring the score to 48-38 going into the fourth.

In the final quarter, the Marlins and Captains traded baskets, going shot-for-shot during an 8-8 run at the 4:52 mark with the score at 56-46. In the final minutes, the Marlins chip away at the score with a 8-2 run to bring the score to 58-54 with less than two minutes left. Both teams fight for the win, but the Captains held the lead, ending the game at 61-56.
