The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team (5-3, 1-1 ODAC) lost to Salisbury University (7-3) at home on Wednesday, December 10th, by a score of 68-88.
Keira Bagwell led the way with 14 points, shooting 5-for-13 from the field, 2-for-2 from the free throw line, and had two rebounds.
Brianna Long also added 12 points to the board, shooting 4-for-10 from the field, one steal, and 12 rebounds.
Jaiden Hunter also tallied up the score by adding 11 points, shooting 5-for-10 from the field, and having 5 rebounds.
Virginia Wesleyan started out strong with an early 3 pointer from
Keira Bagwell, assisted by
Bre Robinson within the first 11 seconds of play. With the score tied up 13-13 with 3:46 left in the first, Salisbury went on a 10-6 run, ending the quarter with a score of 23-17.
In the beginning of the second quarter, the Marlins and Seagulls trade points with a 9-9 run but the score still in favor of the Seagulls at 32-26 with 6:33 left in the second quarter. The two teams traded buckets with Salisbury still holding the heavy lead. In the last minute of the first half with a score of 40-33, the Seagulls went on a 4-0 run to leave the score at 44-33 going into halftime.
Coming out into the second half with a score of 44-33, both teams fought hard going shot for shot with a 9-9 run, bringing the score to 53-42 at 5:02 in the third quarter. Continuing though the last half of the third, the Marlins and Seagulls continued to go back to back with shots, although the Seagulls had the lead. With 1 minute left in the third, the score sat at 65-49. The quarter ended in a 4-4 run, leaving Salisbury still ahead at 67-53.
The Marlins came out strong in the last quarter with
Brianna Long making two of the first shots of the half. With the score now at 67-56, the Seagulls retaliated with a 12-6 run, leaving the score to 79-59 with 4:32 left in the half. Both teams continued to go shot for shot with each other with the Seagulls outshooting the Marlins 10-9, but Salisbury held the lead, ending the game at 88-68.
