The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team (4-1) defeated crosstown rival Regent 69-31.
The Marlins' offense was led by
Brianna Long with 14 points, shooting 7-for-14 from the field, 16 rebounds, five streals, one block, and one assist.
Maesyn Blaylock scored 12 points shooting 6-for-9 from the field, with seven rebounds, four steals, and two assists.
Bre Robinson had 11 points shooting 5-for-11 from the field with one rebounds, five assists, and three steals.
VWU started the first quarter hot, building a 9-3 lead in the first three minutes of the game. Virginia Wesleyan followed its good start with another great run, outscoring the Royals 8-2 to lead 17-5 at the 4:15 mark in the first quarter. The two teams traded threes to bring the score to 20-8, each team scored a bucket to end the first quarter with VWU leading Regent 22-10.
The Marlins kept up the momentum, going on a 6-0 run to start the second quarter. However, both offenses stalled out, for a halftime score of 28-13.
After the break, both teams' offenses ignited, with VWU going on a 6-2 run to hold a 34-15 lead at the 8:13 mark. The two teams traded points to bring the score to 40-20, then the Marlins went on an 8-2 run to increase their lead to 48-22 at the 2:53 mark. VWU outscored the Royals 5-4 the rest of the third quarter to hold a 53-26 lead heading into the final frame.
In the first minute of the fourth quarter, both teams made quick buckets to bring the score to 57-28. After a three-minute scoring drought, McKenzie Wiggins ended the drought with a layup at the 6:43 mark, which sparked a Marlin 8-3 rally to increase their lead to 65-31 with 5:02 left in the game. Virginia Wesleyan closed out the game with a 4-0 run to seal the 69-31 win over Regent.
